(1823 Cologne – 1906 Düsseldorf) Two Italian girls and a horseman are resting by a fountain in the Roman countryside. This work by Flamm, characterized by its motif and stylistic typicality, depicts a sunlit street. It is atmospherically composed, with bright colors portraying various aspects of life on the Via Appia. Flamm studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Andreas Achenbach. He was also a close friend of Andreas’s brother Oswald and undertook several research trips with him. From 1850 to 1853, they traveled to Italy, where they lived in Rome with Arnold Böcklin, and then set out to explore the Roman countryside. Together with Oswald Achenbach, Flamm became one of the most important “Italian painters” and was already well known for his landscapes of the Campagna by 1868. From 1870, he began representing Oswald Achenbach at the Academy. Flamm was also actively involved in the Düsseldorf art scene. In 1848, he was one of the founders of the art society “Malkasten.” Oil on mahogany. Signed. Dimensions: 39 cm x 50 cm. Framed.
