Description

Rectangular picture plate with a depiction of a young, elegant lady as "Yum-Yum", a character from the 1885 premiere of the opera "The Mikado" by William Schwenck Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. She is dressed in a turquoise-colored, finely embellished kimono with a wide, white belt band against a dark brown background, holding an open fan behind her head with both hands. Fine, polychrome painting. Signed "Wagner" in the lower right. Plate number 237-158. On the reverse, there is a black coat of arms seal of the noble family Basswitz from Mecklenburg. Gilt rococo-style stucco frame with velvet blend. Impressed scepter and KPM mark. Plate measures 23.5 cm x 16 cm. Frame measures 40 cm x 33 cm. See Neuwirth, Porcelain Painting, Vol. 2, p. 329ff. Provenance: Likely from the family collection of Joachim Adolph von Basswitz (1859-1918), Rear Admiral of the Imperial Navy. A porcelain plaque with a very finely painted depiction of Yum-Yum, a character from Gilbert and Sullivan's opera "The Mikado". Signed "Wagner". On the reverse, there is a coat of arms seal of the noble family Basswitz. Impressed scepter and KPM mark. Framed. KPM-Berlin. End of the 19th century.
