Along the edge of the coin, the text reads from left to right: the country name in Spanish 'REPUBLICA BOLIVIANA' (Republic of Bolivia), below the Latin letters 'PTS', the inscription '8S' (8 sueldos), the mint year '1838', the engraver's mark 'LM', with dots between the inscriptions. A rope pattern runs along the curved edge of the coin.

In the center, there is a right-facing portrait of Bolivia's first president, Simón Bolívar, in uniform, wearing a laurel wreath on his head. Below the truncation is the person's name 'Bolivar'.
