Dahl studied in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf, among others with Hans Gude; from 1888 to 1919 he was based in Berlin. Dahl regularly spent the summer months in Norway, where since 1893 he had a villa in the Dragon Style in Balestrand and primarily depicted light-filled fjords. From 1877 to 1913, Dahl participated in the major Berlin art exhibitions; in 1876, 1878, 1889, and 1893 he was represented at the world exhibitions in Philadelphia, Paris, and Chicago.
