(1854 Darmstadt - 1918 Lichtenrade near Berlin) Garden still life with mallows in its highly stretched, fragmentary composition as well as in its representative, impressionistic style of the artist. After her artistic training from 1869-1872 at the Karlsruhe Art School, opened her own studio. The still life painter, who was still living in Karlsruhe in 1877, made her debut, noteworthy, with two still lifes at the Berlin Academy Exhibition; in 1879 she sent three still lifes from Rome, where she apparently stayed afterwards, to the Academy Exhibition. Since 1886 she was mainly based in Berlin, where she had access to the court through the Crown Princess and later Empress Victoria. From 1878-1898 she was a member of the Association of Berlin Women Artists, participating in its exhibitions. Oil/cardboard. Signed at the lower edge; verso inscribed and indistinctly titled "(...) Mallows" as well as stating "Castle (.../) b/Hermann Sudermann 150 M". 70.5 cm x 44.5 cm. Frame. The name given on the back refers to the writer and playwright Hermann Sudermann (1857-1928), who was friends with Hermione von Preuschen and for whom the still life was likely intended. Oil on cardboard. Inscribed and indistinctly titled.
