Meissen snuffbox with Saxon castle views.

Meissen

Meissen snuffbox with Saxon castle views.
Description

Passively curved, divided by vertical grates, the corpus is adorned with a flattened back and a hinged lid. In four bombarded, ornamentally framed reserve fields, various landscapes are depicted, including Saxon castle views and partly courtly Watteau figures, among others, with a view of the hunting lodge Hubertusburg, a prospect, and the fortresses Königstein and Sonnenstein. On the lid, a wide landscape with riders standing next to an obelisk, framed by a gold-rank border, reveals the imposing Albrechtsburg in Meissen across the Elbe. The inside of the lid features a fine depiction of a courtly group in front of an impressive fountain complex, with the suggested fortress Königstein and a castle complex to the left. The underside displays a Watteau group and equestrian figures in front of the background of the castle Pillnitz located on the Elbe. Fine, polychrome painting. Gold rim. Interior wall gilding. Gilt, serrated copper mounting with a curved thumb grip. H. 4.1 cm. 8.5 cm x 6.4 cm. Cf. Beaucamp-Markowsky, Porcelain Boxes, No. 26, 113; Meissen Tabatières of the 18th century, Röbbig Munich, No. 29; Corbeiller, Fig. 494. A gilt-copper mounted porcelain snuff box finely painted with landscapes and Saxon castle views of the Meissen Albrechtsburg, Pillnitz, and Hubertus Castle. Meissen. Circa 1745.
