The Birth of Venus
Description

Papier-mâché, black lacquered. Round with a rounded edge. On the lid, there is an image of a nude beauty emerging from the sea with long dark-blond hair, lightly surrounded by clouds and mist. To her left in the water are two hippocamps, to the right a dolphin, and on a cloud a pair of white turtle-doves. On the inside of the lid it is inscribed "The Birth of Venus" in red and numbered "6274". The inner base is correspondingly numbered and marked "Stobwasser Factory in Brunswick". Polychrome lacquer painting. Height 1.5 cm, diameter 9.5 cm. See Museum of Lacquer Art, Münster, Stobwasser, Volume I, p. 114. A very rare and beautiful tobacco box made of Brunswick papier-mâché depicting Venus rising from the sea. Numbered "6274", titled and signed. Brunswick. Stobwasser Factory. 1/3 of the 19th century.
