August Wilhelm Ferdinand Schirmer

(1802 Berlin - 1866 Nyon) An old tree, filled with atmosphere, subtly shaded in warm tones, depicts a mountain landscape with a fallen, old tree in autumn hues. Schirmer initially studied at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin, and then entered the academy as a student of Schadow. From 1827 to 1830, he lived in Italy, where he developed and perfected his characteristic coloristic strength. In 1831, he moved to Berlin, where he established his own studio, which quickly gained an excellent reputation and produced many students. Oil on canvas, slightly relined. Signed and dated 1838. Restored; 38 cm x 31 cm. In a frame.
