Magnificent Meissen coffee pot with merchant scenes
Description

Pear-shaped body on a round pedestal, with volute handles rolled to the side and a short, pointed spout. Domed lid with a centrally gilded disc knob. On both sides of the body, there are passively curved reserves of foliage and strapwork with lustre and lattice work, as well as iron-red, speckled backgrounds, surrounded by rocailles in purple and iron-red. Within them are various so-called "Kaufmann" scenes. In vast river landscapes with multi-masted sailing ships and architectural backdrops, merchants stand negotiating over the incoming goods, between barrels and tied-up bales. In the white background, there are Indian flower branches made of chrysanthemums and prunus, partly with small insects. The border and spout are adorned with a gold vine border. The lid features a corresponding, surrounding harbor prospect over an iron-red double ring line. Fine, polychrome painting by Johann Georg Heintz. Gold rims and staffage. Each with gold number 85. Minimal chipping; crossed swords mark. Height 19 cm. Cf. Catalogue of the Wark Collection, illustration 386, 410. A splendid porcelain coffee jug finely painted with Kaufmann scenes and Indian flowers. Scroll cartouches and Boettger luster. Gold number 85. Minor chipped. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Around 1735.
