(1676 Tournai - 1765 Antwerp) Coastline with a joyfully celebrating company in front of a village, a multi-figure narrative. In the center of the painting, a large barrel is being pulled toward the shore by a man sitting on a horse-drawn cart, while on the left side of the foreground there is a group of dancing children and adults, as well as a bagpipe player. In the middle and background, a village and the sea are depicted, enlivened by figures and numerous ships. Michaud, after studying under Lucas van Uytsselinc in Brussels in 1710/11, became a master of the Antwerp Guild. He particularly excelled in richly populated landscapes in the tradition of Pieter Bout, Jan Brueghel I, and David Teniers—especially river landscapes with farmers and shepherds, as well as richly populated market squares with village views and fishermen selling their catch. Michaud’s works can be found, among others, in the museums of Rotterdam, Braunschweig, Karlsruhe, and Munich. Oil on canvas; signed; old label with the artist’s name on the reverse; 33 cm x 42 cm.
