(1851 Bietigheim/Württemberg - 1917 Karlsruhe) Canal in Rotterdam. The vertically formatted painting, created by Schönleber, offers a view of the canal towards St. Lawrence (Laurenskerk) in Rotterdam. During his student years in Munich, Schönleber visited the Netherlands from 1873 onwards to collect subjects for his paintings, which he then worked on in his studio. In 1880, he was appointed professor at the Karlsruhe Art School, where he brought new impulses to landscape painting, especially in the depiction of light. He also introduced his students, such as Friedrich Kallmorgen, to a new artistic movement—Impressionism. Oil, wooden panel. Signed and dated "Munich 1874." Dimensions: 49 cm x 38 cm. In a frame.
