
KPM (Knallegårdens E.B. Design)

A rectangular porcelain plaque depicting a young elegant woman as "Yum-Yum," a character from the premiere of the opera "The Mikado" (1885) by William Schwenck Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. She is dressed in a turquoise, richly decorated kimono with a wide white obi against a dark brown background, holding an open fan above her head with both hands. The fragment is executed in polychrome painting mastery. Signed "Wagner" at the lower right. Plaque number 237-158. On the reverse side is a black seal of the coat of arms of the noble von Bassewitz family from Mecklenburg. A carved rococo-style frame with velvet lining. The plaque bears a scepter mark and a KPM mark. Plaque size: 23.5 cm x 16 cm, frame size: 40 cm x 33 cm. See Neuwirth, Porcelain Painting, Volume 2, page 329ff. Presumably from the family collection of Joachim Adolf von Bassewitz (1859-1918), Rear Admiral of the Imperial Navy.
