(Groebzig 1789-1822 Naples) View of the Gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius from a hill with trees, in whose shade a figure stands, allowing the treetops to frame an oval view of the sun-drenched bay. This rare, finely painted work, created in 1819, is a small but significant piece by the landscape painter, who left behind only a limited oeuvre. Walkhoff received his drawing instruction from Carl Wilhelm Kolbe (also known as "Eichen-Kolbe") during his youth in Dessau. In 1815, Walkhoff went to Rome, diverging from the idealized art concept of the German "Nazarenes". However, Walkhoff continued as a Romanticist, creating landscapes that oscillate between natural representation, atmospheric painting, and allegory. In 1819, when this painting was created, he further ventured towards the yearning places of many landscape painters - to Sicily and Naples. Three years later, he chose death by his own hand in Naples. A comparable view of Naples with Vesuvius (from 1820) can be found in the Georgium Palace in Dessau. Oil on canvas; signed and dated 1819. 28.5 cm x 42 cm. Framed.
