(1812 Paris - 1890 Marlotte) Fischer's People on the Seine, executed with a tonal color and loose brushwork, is a lively landscape vedute, enlivened by fishermen with their boats. In the tradition of the Barbizon school, Cicerone here holds nature directly and firmly in a subtle, realistic depiction. Initially a student of his father Pierre Luc Charles Ciceri (1782-1868), he soon focused on the inspiration of his uncle Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855) and fully embraced landscape painting. Influenced by his Parisian neighbors and fellow painters such as Théodore Rousseau, Jules Dupré, Narcisse Diaz, Johan Barthold Jongkind, and Jean-François Millet, he embarked on immediate studies in the forests of Fontainebleau and regularly exhibited in the salon from 1851. In the 1870s, his palette gradually brightened, and his attention to atmospheric effects and colorful light demonstrates the growing influence of Impressionism. Oil on mahogany panel. Signed. 35.5 cm x 55 cm. Framed.
