"Impressionistic urban landscape by Otto Dill"
Description

(1884 Neustadt a. d. Hardt - 1957 Bad Dürkheim) "Notre Dame". Original title "View from the bustling square to the famous west facade of the Gothic cathedral in Paris". Rare, impressionistic, painted with virtuoso loose brushwork, today nostalgically charming cityscape by Otto Dill from the year 1948. This view combines it with one of his other favorite motifs - an elegant horse-drawn carriage, which leads the viewer and contrasts with the modern automobiles in the background. Like the Berlin Impressionist Lesser Ury, Otto Dill also sets the scene in a metropolitan cityscape, which corresponds entirely to the vibrant atmosphere with its flickering lights and dynamic, impulsive brushwork. Otto Dill studied from 1908-1914 at the Munich Academy and was there from 1909-1913 a master student of the animal painter Heinrich von Zügel, who also familiarized him with plein air painting and Impressionism. The representation of horses and riders, be it in races, tournaments, or as carriage teams, forms one of the central themes in Otto Dill's oeuvre, alongside lions and other big cats. Already in the summer of 1917, Dill was represented with a first, quite extensive collection of 10 oil paintings and 15 drawings at the exhibition in the Munich Glass Palace. As a member of the Munich Secession, he participated from 1922-1930 in various exhibitions of the artists' association. In 1924, he was awarded the title of professor, and in 1949 he was appointed an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1930, the artist moved from Munich to Neustadt an der Weinstraße, and in 1941 he moved to Bad Dürkheim, where he lived and worked until his death in 1957. Alongside Max Slevogt, Otto Dill is today one of the most important artists of classical modernism from the Palatinate. Oil/hardboard. Signed.
