Lorenz Petersen, the son of a sailor, was active in Altona from 1830, where he created numerous ship portraits for captains, owners, and shipowners. Until 1858, Peter Petersen painted his marine paintings independently, and from 1858 to 1869 he worked together with his half-brother Peter Christian Holm (1823-1888).
