(1810 Dittelsheim, near Worms – 1872 Frankfurt am Main) A young peasant family on their way home. A romanticized late Biedermeier genre painting with an idyllic scene depicted at the bottom of a narrow path surrounded by trees. In the foreground, a young mother carries a large wicker basket filled with gathered clover, looking back at her husband and their joyfully lifted child; next to and behind them, a peasant girl with a sickle and a branch urges on a lamb. Becker worked in the Frankfurt art workshop of Vogel from 1826 as a lithographer, while simultaneously attending the Städel Art Institute. From 1833 to 1841, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Wilhelm von Schadow. In the mid-1830s, Becker turned to narrative genre painting with a focus on local subjects. From 1834, Becker actively exhibited with great success. In 1840, the painting "The Storm" was completed in two versions, with dramatic cuts, acquired by the National Gallery in Berlin and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. As a result, he was appointed professor of genre and landscape painting at the Städel Art Institute in 1842. In 1845, he was made a member of the Prussian Academy in Berlin. Oil on canvas; signed and dated 1858; 90 cm x 66 cm. Framed.
