(1836 Dinkelsbühl – 1897 Munich) Aristocratic Rococo society at a home concert in a salon. A narrative, cheerful genre painting featuring a standing young violinist captivating an elegant lady with his playing or personality, as she leans forward with an expressive gesture. While her companion, seated beside her, ignores the music and shows interest only in the violinist, the older cellist, seated near the center of the composition, expresses his open enthusiasm for him with a benevolent smile and delight in the performance. Herpfer studied at the Munich Academy from 1854 under Johann von Schraudolph, Philipp von Foltz, Karl von Piloty, and Arthur von Ramberg. From 1869, he exhibited at the Munich Crystal Palace and also participated in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. His artistically outstanding genre paintings, dominated by the aristocratic world of the 18th century, simultaneously met the representational needs of his time. Signed with the location Munich. 91.5 cm x 110.5 cm. Ornate frame. Oil on canvas.
