(1867 Munich – 1939 Oberammergau) Three-masted ship off a rocky coast – a late Impressionist painting by Diemer, who is primarily known for his marine paintings featuring large sailing ships. Diemer made his debut after graduating from the academy in 1890 with a landscape at the Munich Crystal Palace. In the 1890s, he established himself as a successful Alpine artist, creating historical paintings and large battle panoramas. From 1900 onwards, he shifted to a new main theme and increasingly became a marine painter: he regularly participated in HAPAG cruises in the North Sea and the Mediterranean, using sketches and watercolors made during these trips as the basis for his studio works. The resulting recurring main motifs dominate the foreground: sailing ships on a deep blue sea and, mostly, a low horizon. Oil on canvas; signed; 59.5 cm x 83.5 cm. Original frame.
