The painting, executed in soft impasto, is by Dupré, whose body of work includes a significant number of such evening or nocturnal landscapes from the Forest of Fontainebleau and its surroundings. Dupré, one of the most important artists of the Barbizon School and a close friend of Théodore Rousseau, was one of the most influential French landscape painters of the 19th century; he was also one of the co-founders of the "Intimate Landscape" movement.
