Description

On a naturalistic base adorned with painted leaves and flowers stands a gentleman in the role of a Parisian guide. He wears a long striped coat over black pin-striped trousers and black stockings. In his hands, he holds a scroll or staff. On his back, he carries a wooden frame with a bundle and a box. Polychrome painting with gold accents. Possibly made by Peter Reinicke and Johann Joachim Kändler around 1745. Restored; sword mark. Height 19 cm. From the first series of guides based on a copper engraving by Ch. F. Caylus after red chalk drawings by Edme Bouchardon (now in the British Museum, London). See Reinheckel, Weltkunst Vol. 62 (1992), No. 9, pp. 1161ff. Porcelain figure of a porter from the "Cris de Paris" series. Restored. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Mid-18th century.
