Erich Hösel was a renowned German animal sculptor. He began his studies in 1886 at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.
From 1903 until his retirement in 1929, Erich Hösel worked at the Meissen Manufactory, and in 1912 he became head of the design department. In just the period from 1904 to 1918, he created around 100 sculptural models.
His works were always distinguished by a special realism and love for detail. Each figurine is made with particular care and knowledge of the animal's habits, life, and character.
The animal figures are mostly executed in white porcelain with traditional naturalistic hand-painting.
He gained the necessary observations during exploratory trips to countries in Africa and the Middle East, as well as through constant visits to zoos across Europe.
