A full-bodied Chinese figure with a gray beard sits cross-legged, wearing a yellow robe adorned with Indian flowers, a gilded lace collar, a belt set with precious stones, and plum-purple shoes. His hands and head are mobile, but his tongue remains still. Polychrome painting is embellished with gold details (later additions). Sword mark. Height: 32 cm. So-called "rocking pagodas" can be traced back to designs from 1762, when Frederick II of Prussia ordered "10 pagodas with rocking heads" (five female and five male) for the Chinese House at Sanssouci. See catalog of the Royal Saxon Porcelain Manufactory, 1904, page 27; Rückert, Bavarian National Museum, No. 1027; Pietsch, Triumph, page 144. Large porcelain figure of a male rocking pagoda. Restored. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. Circa 1770.
