Description

Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1820 - 1904) "after Franz Xaver Winterhalter." A rectangular porcelain plaque depicting the duchess in a forest landscape, magnificently dressed in a blue gown with black lace and red flowers on the neckline. Based on Winterhalter’s 1842 portrait. Number and marking on the reverse with an old label "304 Alexandra Countess Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1840-" as well as two overlapping inventory labels, including "Schloss Baden Inventory Page 368 No. 37." 12 cm x 15.3 cm. Gilt wooden frame with matching applied brass plate, numbered "304." Provenance: from the collection of the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden, Sotheby’s auction October 5-21, 1995, Baden-Baden, lot no. 5865.
