(1676 Tournai - 1765 Antwerp) Coastal landscape with a joyfully celebrating society in front of a village, a multifigure, narrative scene. In the center of the painting, a large barrel is being pulled towards the coast by a man sitting on a horse-drawn carriage, while on the left side of the image, a group of dancing children and adults as well as a bagpiper are depicted in the foreground. In the middle and background, the village and the sea are portrayed, bustling with figures and numerous ships. Michau, after his training with Lucas van Achtscellinc in Brussels in 1710/11, became a master of the Antwerp Guild. He particularly excelled in richly staffed landscapes in the tradition of Pieter Bout, Jan Brueghel I, and David Teniers - especially river landscapes with farmers and shepherds, as well as richly populated marketplaces with village views and fishermen selling their catch. Michau's works can be found, among others, in museums in Rotterdam, Braunschweig, Karlsruhe, and Munich. Oil on canvas; signed; verso old label with artist's name; 33 cm x 42 cm. Framed.
