(1824 Würzburg - 1903 Munich) Rider Battle between Austrian troops under Field Marshal Radetzky against those of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont in the Battle of Novara 1849. The finely detailed representation of the dramatic combat scene shows a vivid depiction of the horses in motion. In the center of the painting, two soldiers stand, engaging in combat with lance and sword, while two fallen soldiers lie on the ground before them. This is an early work by Behringer, who himself served as a captain in the Bavarian army. He stands in the tradition of Dietrich Montens and succeeded as a sought-after painter of military scenes and uniform depictions, which also appeared as lithographs. Since 1866, Behringer exhibited at the Munich Art Association. Oil on oak panel. Restored; signed and indistinctly dated "185(1?)". 52 cm x 56.5 cm. Framed. The Battle of Novara in Northern Italy on March 23, 1849, was one of the decisive battles between the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia during the First Italian Independence War. It led to a heavy defeat of the Piedmontese army.
