(1844 Hamburg - 1915 Prien am Chiemsee) The admirer depicted with subtle attention to detail, rural genre scenes that show a peasant lad in Upper Bavarian attire attempting to impress a young girl knitting on the farm. This finely painted, characteristic cabinet painting is by Hugo Kauffmann, son of the renowned Hamburg genre and landscape painter Hermann Kauffmann (1808-1889). From 1861 to 1863, he studied at the Städel's Art Institute in Frankfurt a. M. and settled in Munich and Prien from 1871. His oeuvre particularly showcases his talent as an outstanding painter of humorous and subtly observed scenes from Bavarian folk life, full of narrative power. He mostly composed these scenes in taverns and peasant parlors, with a keen sense for details and lighting. Oil on mahogany panel. Signed and dated 1900.
