

(1613/14 Frankenthal – 1681 Frankfurt am Main) attributed; Still Life with Grapes and Pomegranates, arranged on a tabletop, depicted in a naturalistic style, on a blue-and-white Chinese porcelain plate with bright and dark grape berries, surrounded or held by two pomegranates, scattered individual grapes, a snail, and a small caterpillar. Marrel studied from 1624 to 1632 with Georg Flegel in Frankfurt, then studied and joined the workshop of Jan Davidsz. de Heem in Utrecht in 1632. After already working in his own workshop in Utrecht and taking Abraham Mignon as a pupil, he was in Frankfurt from 1650 to 1665. There, in 1651, he married Johanna Sibylla Merian (widow of Matthäus Merian the Elder), which made him the stepfather and later teacher of Maria Sibylla Merian. Besides Jan Davidsz. de Heem, his work was also influenced by Roelant Savery and Ambrosius (II) Bosschaert. Oil, canvas, lining; 21 cm x 32 cm. Baroque frame.
