Description

(1636 Lille – 1699 London) attributed; Still life of a bouquet consisting of tulips, peonies, carnations, and various spring flowers, arranged in a glass vase against a dark, neutral background. This floral work by Monnoyer is typical in style and subject, with delicately painted, brightly glowing flowers. Monnoyer moved to Paris around 1650, where he collaborated with Charles Le Brun on the decoration of royal palaces and castles. After joining the Academy in 1665, he presented four flower still lifes at the Salon in 1673 and quickly became a master in this field. Monnoyer was a chosen artist of the Sun King, who had a collection of his paintings. Oil on canvas; relined; 44 cm x 35 cm. In a frame. Attributed to Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636–1699).
