

(1782 London – 1875 same place) attributed; Portrait of an elderly gentleman of distinguished appearance, beautifully drawn, expressive, characterizing, a realistic portrait of a gentleman sitting in an armchair. Probably a depiction of the famous English engineer and principal founder of the railway system, George Stephenson (1781–1848), whom Pickersgill also portrayed around 1845. Pickersgill is one of the most significant portraitists of his time, and the most prominent figures sat for him as models.
