(1837 Dresden – 1902 Munich) A shepherd gathers his flock before a snowstorm into a sheltered stable. A characteristic scene by Meissner, depicting animals with picturesque detail and effectively conveying a winter landscape. Meissner, who studied at the Dresden Academy under Robert Kummer and settled in Munich from 1870, created a large series of comparable winter shepherd scenes. He is considered one of the main masters of Munich animal painting alongside Anton Braith, Otto Gebler, and Heinrich von Zügel. In 1875, the Dresden Picture Gallery acquired a winter shepherd scene. Oil on canvas; signed and location noted: Munich. 80 cm x 120 cm. Framed. See Boetticher, Vol. II/1, p. 6 ff.; Thieme-Becker, Vol. XXIV, p. 346.
