(1837 Dresden - 1902 Munich) A shepherd gathers his flock before a snowstorm into a sheltered stable. A characteristic scene by Meißner, depicting animals with painterly detail and effectively rendering a winter landscape. Meißner, who studied at the Dresden Academy under Robert Kummer and settled in Munich in 1870, created a large series of comparable winter pastoral scenes. He is considered one of the leading masters of Munich animal painting alongside Anton Braith, Otto Gebler, and Heinrich von Zügel. In 1875, the Dresden Picture Gallery acquired a winter pastoral scene. Oil on canvas; signed and inscribed: Munich. 80 cm x 120 cm. Framed. See Bötticher, vol. II/1, p. 6 ff.; Thieme-Becker, vol. XXIV, p. 346.
