(1821, Beaune – 1911, Paris) "Gondolas." The original title is Meisterhaft, executed with a few brushstrokes—a preliminary study of a fully occupied Venetian gondola with gondoliers. Ziem was a member of the Barbizon School, debuting at the Paris Salon in 1849, and since then became a regular participant in exhibitions. In 1860, Ziem settled in the artistic quarter of Montmartre. Ziem’s favorite motif was Venice, where he traveled annually from 1841 to 1892. Oil on oak panel. Titled and signed on the reverse; 14 cm x 45.5 cm. In a frame.
