(1676 Tournai - 1765 Antwerp) Coastline with a joyfully celebrating society in front of a village, a multi-figure narrative. In the center of the painting, a large barrel is being pulled to the shore by a man sitting on a horse-drawn cart, while on the left side of the foreground, a group of dancing children and adults is depicted, along with a bagpipe player. In the midground and background, a village and the sea are shown, animated with figures and numerous ships. Michau, after studying under Lucas van Achtselink in Brussels in 1710/11, became a master of the Antwerp guild. He particularly excelled in richly populated landscapes in the tradition of Pieter Bout, Jan Brueghel I, and David Teniers—especially river landscapes with farmers and shepherds, as well as richly populated market squares with views of villages and fishermen selling their catch. Michau's works can be found, among others, in the museums of Rotterdam, Brunswick, Karlsruhe, and Munich. Oil on canvas; signed; the reverse bears an old label with the artist's name; 33 cm x 42 cm.
