(1849 Niendorf - 1938 Hagen) Margherite 1928 on Lake Maggiore, a sheet created by the significant German Expressionist who had previously settled in Swiss Ticino. With great passion, he often depicted flowers, landscapes, and cityscapes in vibrant colors in his late works. During the Weimar Republic, Rohlfs was a highly esteemed artist. In 1919, a major special exhibition was held at the National Gallery in Berlin for his 70th birthday, and in 1924, he was honored in Berlin with membership in the Prussian Academy of Arts. In the "Third Reich," Rohlfs was also among the modern artists deemed "degenerate" and persecuted by the National Socialists. Over 400 of his works were confiscated from German museums in 1937, he was banned from exhibiting, and on January 7, 1938, one day before his death, he was expelled from the Academy of Arts. Colored chalk drawing on light brown textured paper. The reverse bears the estate stamp "ESTATE OF CHRISTIAN ROHLFS" in blue, as well as "FRAU CHRISTIAN ROHLFS." 50 cm x 4.8 cm. Framed. Provenance: Auction Hauswedell & Nolte, June 13, 2014, Hamburg, lot 429.
