Executed with delicate brushstrokes, this sheet by Dupré, who belonged to the Barbizon school, is a leading example of the so-called "intimate landscape" and a founder of modern French landscape painting. Dupré debuted at the Paris Salon in 1831. He mainly depicted French landscapes, but from 1835 to 1839 he was also influenced by English motifs, especially those used by John Constable.
