(1836 Schröbenhausen - 1904 Munich) "Campagnole". Original title. Expressive, with a swift, powerful brushstroke and a thick application of paint, painted in 1858 in Rome, this bust portrait of a shepherd transcends the usual genre painting and conventions. It belongs to the early works of the artist and combines stylistic influences of realism from Gustave Courbet, the Barbizon School, and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Lenbach studied at the Academy in Munich since 1854, and since November 1857 under Karl Theodor von Piloty. From August to November 1858, Lenbach undertook a study trip to Rome with Piloty. One result was the completed painting "The Arch of Titus" in 1860 (in the National Gallery in Budapest) and "Italian Boys" from 1859 (in the Castle Museum in Weimar). In the same year (1859), the painting "The Red Umbrella" was created, an early work of German Impressionism (in the Kunsthalle Hamburg). Oil on canvas; signed and dated 1858 with location Rome; label from the 9th Munich International Art Exhibition. 50 cm x 41 cm. Framed. Literature: Catalog "Lenbach Exhibition", organized by the Central Committee of the 9th International Art Exhibition in Munich 1905, No. 173, p. 27.
