Portrait of Duchess Friederike of Saxony-Anhalt, born Princess of Prussia

(1824 Dessau - 1897 Hummelshain) Portrait of her mother, Duchess Friederike of Saxony-Anhalt, born Princess of Prussia. A meticulously detailed depiction of the Duchess, seated in an armchair, wearing a dark red velvet dress and a sable mantle adorned with pearl necklaces. On her head she wears a red velvet hat with a white ostrich feather. Next to her is a bowl of flowers, and in the background—a curtain and a view of a hall. Oil on canvas; signed and dated "HA" with the Duke's crown, 1890. On the reverse, an old adhesive label with handwritten information and a (partially abbreviated) date: "This portrait of Duchess Friederike of Anhalt, born Princess of Prussia, was copied by her daughter Duchess Agnes of Anhalt after the original painting by Professor Krüger of Berlin in 1891." 103 cm x 76 cm. Original ornamental frame with crown. Krüger's 1849 painting existed in three versions in the Royal Palace in Berlin, the Dessau Palace, and in the possession of the Duke of Cumberland in Vienna (see Margaret Cohen, "Franz Krüger. Life and Work," diss. Breslau 1909, p. 61, nos. 2-4). Friederike of Saxony-Anhalt (1796-1850) was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Ludwig Karl of Prussia and, since 1818, the wife of Duke Leopold IV of Anhalt; her daughter Agnes married the hereditary prince Ernst of Saxe-Altenburg in 1853.
