(1844 Hamburg – 1915 Prien am Chiemsee) A peasant girl from Upper Bavaria looks at herself in a wall mirror. Beautifully painted, a characteristic cabinet painting by Hugo Kaufmann, son of the famous Hamburg genre and landscape painter Hermann Kaufmann (1808 – 1889). From 1861 to 1863, he studied at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main and settled in Munich and Prien from 1871 onwards. In his work, Hugo Kaufmann demonstrates his talent as an outstanding artist, depicting humorous, keenly observed scenes from Bavarian folk life, full of narrative power. He mainly created these scenes in taverns and peasant rooms, with a sensitive attention to detail and lighting. In addition, he produced a series of rural portraits, with a preference for portraits of peasant women in national costumes. Oil on red wooden panel. Signed. On the reverse – the stamp of the Wolf Anton von Manner art collection, a stamp with a coat of arms, a paper label with the number 103 and the artist’s name “Hugo Kaufmann.” 24.5 cm x 18.5 cm. Frame. Provenance: From the collection of Wolf Anton Reichsritter von Manner zu Metzelstorf (1850–1922), Vienna.
