Johann Wilhelm Schirmer - Evening Landscape

(1814 Werl - 1883 Düsseldorf) Lake Hallstätter with Boats in Evening Light - a characteristic, coloristically rich late Romantic painting with a high density of atmosphere and a fine sensitivity to light and the topography of the landscape. The artist Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, who studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1833 to 1840, primarily painted alpine lakes, which he successfully exhibited from 1836 onward. The work is executed in oil on canvas, measuring 60 cm x 93 cm, and is set in its original frame. On the reverse, remnants of the original label with the title remain. The painting is signed and dated 1845.
