(1837 Dresden - 1902 Munich) The shepherd gathers his flock before a snowstorm in a sheltered pen. A characteristic scene by Meissner, depicting animals with picturesque detail and effectively conveying the winter landscape. Meissner, who studied at the Dresden Academy under Robert Kummer and settled in Munich from 1870, created a large series of comparable winter pastoral scenes. He is considered one of the leading masters of Munich animal painting alongside Anton Braith, Otto Gebler, and Heinrich von Zügel. In 1875, the Dresden Picture Gallery acquired a winter pastoral scene. Oil on canvas; signature and indication of location: Munich. 80 cm x 120 cm. In a frame. See Bötticher, vol. II/1, p. 6 and following; Thieme-Becker, vol. XXIV, p. 346.
