(1842 Athens – 1921 Goslar) Resting Fishermen on the Greek Coast
An early painting with a rare Mediterranean motif. Ekkebrecht had an early connection with Greece, not only through his place of birth. His father, Gustav von Ekkebrecht, a cosmopolitan historian, physician, and writer who was a friend of Heinrich Schliemann, had already traveled extensively in Greece and the Middle East. From 1850 to 1857, the family lived in Constantinople. In 1859/60, Themistocles initially studied painting under the court artist Karl Gustav Wegener in Potsdam, but the decisive factor was that he became a private student of Oswald Achenbach in Düsseldorf from 1861 to 1863. His extraordinarily numerous and extensive travels took him, among other places, to Norway, as well as to Egypt, Greece, Italy, England, and Turkey.
