SOVIET PORCELAIN FIGURINE OF A UKRAINIAN WOMAN, BASED ON THE DESIGN OF ASTA DAVYDNOVNA BRZHEZITSKAYA, DULEVO PORCELAIN FACTORY, CIRCA 1952, naturalistically modeled, a young woman dressed in a traditional dress with Ukrainian embroidery on the blouse, her hair adorned with a wreath of flowers, she stands on a round base with pseudo-embroidery and gilding, height: 35.5 cm (14 inches), marked with the factory mark on the base. NOTES TO THE LOT. This figurine of a Ukrainian woman belongs to a series of porcelain items called "Republics of the USSR," created during the Stalinist regime and corresponding to the high Stalinist aesthetic style. The series was later criticized for its excessiveness and incompatibility with the more ascetic direction of the Thaw Period. LITERATURE: A similar figurine is illustrated in the book by Karen Kettering, ed., "Ode to Joy: Russian Porcelain in the Collection of Yuri Treisman," (Moscow: Pinakotheka, 2008), p. 189.
