TheBeirut Art Center(BAC) on June 6 revealed that it has appointed writer, curator, and creator Ibrahim Nehme as its new director. He will take over from Reem Shadid, who has occupied the post since last year. In a statement onInstagram, the fifteen-year-old nonprofit announced that it is shifting its managerial structure, with the result that the directorial role will focus on fundraising, financial stability, and management. Nehme will be tasked with “set[ting] an artistic vision with an advisory committee to invite curators to organize the exhibitions and events at BAC.”

The Beirut-based Nehme is the founding editor ofThe Outpostmagazine and a co-creator of the independent publicationA Dance Magand of the new media platforms Kiteverse app, a creative writing game, and Radio Mansion, a twenty-four-hour internet radio station. Recent projects includePORT FICTION, 2023, a web-based audiovisual documentary on the Beirut port explosion of 2020, created in collaboration with six Lebanese and German artists; and the 2021 theatrical productionnouvelle nahda, a collaborative effort of Theater Neumarkt, Zurich, and Station Beirut, to which he contributed a text.

“With extensive experience in communications and a strong strategic vision, Ibrahim will work hand in hand with our team and the board to guarantee the center’s continued commitment to its mission and realization of its maximum capabilities in a sustainable fashion,” the BAC affirmed. ”Additionally, Ibrahim will actively pursue fresh local and global partnerships while sustaining and further developing an active outreach initiative.”The BAC was founded in 2009 in the Lebanese capital of Beirut as a nonprofit association and exhibition venue devoted to experimental contemporary art. The center supports local and regional artists and the surrounding community through programming that includes exhibitions, learning initiatives, cinema, and music.
