(1849 Nienendorf - 1938 Hagen) Marguerites 1928 at Lago Maggiore, a leaf created by the significant German Expressionist who had previously settled in the Swiss Tessin. With great passion, he often painted flowers, landscapes, and cityscapes in vibrant colors in his later works. During the Weimar Republic, Rohlfs was a highly respected artist. In 1919, a large special exhibition was held in the National Gallery in Berlin to celebrate his 70th birthday, and in 1924, he was honored in Berlin with membership in the Prussian Academy of Arts. In the "Third Reich," Rohlfs was also among the modern artists deemed "degenerate" and persecuted by the National Socialists. Over 400 of his works were confiscated from German museums in 1937, he was banned from exhibiting, and on January 7, 1938, one day before his death, he was expelled from the Academy of Arts. Colored chalk drawing on light brown wove paper. Verso with estate stamp "NACHLASS CHRISTIAN ROHLFS" in blue as well as "FRAU CHRISTIAN ROHLFS". 50 cm x 4.8 cm. Framed. Provenance: Auction Hauswedell & Nolte, 13.06.2014, Hamburg, Lot 429.
