(Born in 1954 in Weimar) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. A portrait of Goethe, conceived in reduced yellow and blue tones, in an enormously pastose, relief-like application of paint, inspired by the famous work "Goethe in the Roman Campagna" by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein from the year 1787. This work, which gained great popularity and absolute recognizability, especially after Andy Warhol quoted the depiction of Goethe with the wide-brimmed hat in his well-known silkscreen series, is characterized by its blackness. The artist, who studied at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences with Werner Schriefers from 1976 and with Gerhard Hoehme at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1978, has been dealing with the theme of the reunification of Germany and the subsequent founding of the European Union, as well as the history and significance of his hometown and its important personalities, in his oeuvre from an early stage. He is considered one of the most important German artists of the present and has created a comprehensive body of work characterized by outstanding visionary power, inspired by his great role model Vincent van Gogh. Oil on cardboard, laid down on wooden panel. Approximate dimensions: 97 cm x 97 cm. Framed. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist's studio in 2017.
