(Born in 1954 in Weimar) Johann Wolfgang Goethe. A portrait of Goethe, created in subdued yellow-blue tones, with very dense, textured application of paint, inspired by the famous work “Goethe in the Roman Campagna” by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein from 1787. This work, which gained great popularity and absolute recognizability, especially after Andy Warhol quoted the image of Goethe with a wide-brimmed hat in his well-known series of silkscreens, is characterized by its darkness. The artist, who studied at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences under Werner Schriefer from 1976 and with Gerhard Hoehme at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1978, has, from the early stage of his career, dealt with the theme of German reunification and the subsequent formation of the European Union, as well as the history and significance of his native city and its important figures. He is considered one of the most important German artists of the present time and has created an extensive creative legacy, distinguished by outstanding prophetic power, inspired by his main idol Vincent van Gogh. Oil on cardboard, mounted on a wooden panel. Approximate dimensions: 97 cm x 97 cm. In a frame. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist’s studio in 2017.
