(1921 Boulogne-sur-Mer - 2012 Paris) Untitled. Mathieu's powerful, harsh abstraction is at the forefront of French Informel, which he enriched with his calligraphic drawing in new aspects. After studying literature, law, and philosophy in Lille, Mathieu began painting in 1942. He rejected geometric abstraction, represented, among others, by Suprematism, and instead pursued spontaneous, gestural painting, which he championed as "lyrical abstraction." Inspired by Japanese calligraphy, Mathieu worked spontaneously with great speed and energetic movements, without rational control or compositional rules. The creative process took center stage, leading to impressive actions and accidents in painting. Acrylic and watercolor on Arches paper (watermark and wax seal). Signed and dated 2000 with a personal dedication from the artist. Sheet size 57.5 cm x 76.8 cm.
