This large (28 cm) Japanese statuette from the Hakata workshops depicts a sumo wrestler - the champion Sumo Wrestler with a katana in hand and in traditional ceremonial attire in honor of the opening of the competition. Each figure was made based on a specific champion wrestler.

Original The Hakata workshops are a unique production of ceramic statuettes and figures on the island of Kyushu, widely known since the Paris World Exhibition of 1900. All figures are made and painted by hand, and exist in very limited quantities.
