Pendant "Chevre pied" with a portrait of a young faun in profile, made of faience, white shards. Oval, cut-out shape. Finished with light blue and white slip. Catalogue raisonné Guédras 317. Variant of 4 pendants, designed by Cocteau in 1958 and produced in a small series at the Madeleine-Jolly ceramic workshop (Philippe Madeleine and Marie-Madeleine Jolly) in Villefranche-sur-Mer. This pendant features a characteristic Cocteau motif and the stylistic outlines of a sun-drenched sea.
On the reverse, the signature "Jean Cocteau" with a star is applied in black brushstroke. Hung on a copper chain. Height 10.2 cm.
Cocteau worked as a writer, painter, draftsman, fresco artist, stage designer, film director, and ceramist. In 1957, he met the artist couple Marie-Madeleine Jolly and Philippe Madeleine, with whom he developed a close friendship. In their workshop, he created unique ceramic pieces until 1963 and designed more than 300 ceramic works in small series.
Provenance: According to information from the supplier, it belonged to the American actor and director Joe (Joseph) Warfield (1937–2022) from Baltimore.
