Description

Silver, gilded with wooden inlays and lacquered with so-called Vernis Martin. Rectangular form with slightly concave sides. Neat wavy engravings on all surfaces. The edges are relief-decorated with a floral ornament. The lid features a wooden inlay depicting a mountainous landscape in reddish-brown tones and gold lacquer by a river. The banks are adorned with Japanese cherry trees and pines. Minimum weight; markings, hallmarks, a guarantee mark from 1838, and an indistinguishable workshop mark "DL" (?). Weight approximately 65 g. Height 1.3 cm. Dimensions 6.6 cm x 4 cm. Compare with Rosenberg, Volume IV, numbers 5893, 6579, 6593. A rare French tobacco box in Louis XV style, gilded and fitted with Japanese lacquer. Minor dents. Acceptance and guarantee mark from 1838. Indistinguishable workshop mark. France. Paris. 1838.
